In 2015, the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) approved the creation of its first Implementation Unit (UE) that focuses specifically on the study of Law and Legal Sciences. This UE was based on the research centre that had been active at the Faculty of Law of the National University of Córdoba (UNC) since 1985. Thus, in the beginning, the UE kept the same name, Centre for Legal and Social Research (CIJS, CONICET-UNC), with its facilities and infrastructure serving as headquarters and support during the initial phase. Its management had started two years before, in 2013, when the former Dean of the Faculty of Law, PhD Marcela Aspell, submitted a proposal. The initiative gained momentum with the visit of PhD Dora Barrancos, who was part of the Board of CONICET.

In 2017, the UE began operating effectively after the open competition for its first Director, PhD Esteban Llamosas, who held a dual appointment by the Board of CONICET and the University Council. In 2018, the institutional processes were completed with the election of the first Governing Board, the appointment of the first Vice-director, PhD Guillermo Lariguet, and the approval of the Internal Regulations.

Since then, IDEJUS has made significant progress in achieving the goals proposed in the Institutional Management Plan. These goals include supporting research groups, fostering interdisciplinary ties, creating the incentive program for young researchers, strengthening the relationship with the graduate and postgraduate areas of the Faculty of Law, increasing knowledge-transfer activities and institutionally incorporating this UE to the Scientific and Technological Centre (CCT) CONICET Córdoba.

During 2020, the UE was granted its first CONICET institutional subsidy through a Project of Implementation Unit (PUE), which was presented and developed by a team of researchers and fellows that study legal sociology, legal philosophy, political ethics, gender studies and constitutional law. Between 2021 and 2022, two members of the Support Staff Career (CPA), specialists in scientific communication, were admitted through an open competition. This event strengthened and professionalized the dissemination of its activities and its engagement with the community.

In 2022, following the UE’s consolidation and growth, it was administratively separated from the Centre for Research. As a consequence, the process to change its name began. On April 13, 2023, concluding the deliberation process within the community and the UE’s Governing Board, CONICET’s Board approved the new name: Institute for the Study of Law, Justice and Society (IDEJUS). The new institutional identity was reaffirmed during the official name change ceremony on April 21, attended by the former President of CONICET, PhD Ana Franchi, authorities of CONICET Córdoba, UNC and the Faculty of Law, and members of the institute community.

That same year, IDEJUS was recognized by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights of the province of Córdoba and by the Argentine Association of Constitutional Justice for its high-quality contributions to research, knowledge transfer and the dissemination of legal and social sciences.

Since then, IDEJUS continues consolidating its own academic profile, with national and international reach, training young researchers, contributing legal knowledge to the public debate, spreading its scientific output to citizens, supporting the education of better legal professionals, and in particular, carrying out a growing process of knowledge transfer through advisory and training services for several public and private institutions (provincial judicial branch, ministries, municipalities, civil associations).
